The beauty of shirts is the huge number of ways they can be worn. Formal or casual; collar open or buttoned up; hem tied or tucked, they’re truly the hero piece of your wardrobe. Need more convincing? Read on to discover some of the ways we’re shaking up shirt styling this season.
Right now, everyone is talking about the French Tuck, which sounds much more complicated than it is. Remember the white shirt and jeans Meghan Markle wore that sent the press into a frenzy? It looked so good because Meghan had “French-tucked” the shirt. Working best with higher-waistbands and tops with a high-low hem, simply tuck only the front of your shirt into the waist of your trousers, slightly tug the sides to make it fall in the most flattering way, et voila!
This season’s breakout trend is the Resort Shirt – so called because the short-sleeve style is perfect for your summer-holiday wardrobe (and is typical of the fashion pre-collections which are released around holiday season). Tying the front of yours works extra well with the more relaxed feel and softer fabrications used to make them. Simply undo the last few buttons to where best flatters your natural waist, and secure at the front.
Rolling up your sleeves is the perfect way to make a more formal cotton shirt feel casual. But there’s an art to the perfect rolled cuffs (plus, you don’t want them falling back down all day.) To keep yours looking pleasingly perfect, try these steps:
- If it has buttons on the cuff, undo them
- Fold your sleeve halfway up the arm, so that the cuff is around your elbow.
- Roll the bottom of the sleeve up the arm one to two times, to secure the cuff in place
- Adjust the cuff so it peeks out on either side, then push it up to the right point on your arm
