The power of a red lip

Is there anything more instantly mood-boosting than a slick of red lipstick? It’s one of the easiest (and most pocket friendly) ways to put a spring in your step, and one of those small changes you can implement that makes a big difference to the way you look and feel. While the red lip has traditionally signalled unbridled glamour, it’s certainly no longer reserved for after-hours. In fact, it’s become hallmark for relaxed glamour, whatever time of the day. Here are some of our favourites out there…

The new cult classic: Gipsy Lipstick in Bad Reputation, £22, Nars

Beauty stalwart Nars has been a firm fixture in many-a-make-up bag. Most of us rely on their sell-out blushers but we think this new lipstick deserves equal billing. With a choice from three finishes (sheer, matt and satin) and a moringa and passion fruit oil blend, expect smooth, even coverage in a super-wearable lightweight finish.

The multi-tasker: Lip Tint in Cherry Bomb, £8.95, Frank Body

With precious handbag space at a premium, we’re seeing an emergence of more double- (or even triple-) duty products that pledge to tick off more of your morning to-do list. This lip and cheek tint, from Aussie brand Frank Body, does just that with a nourishing rich cherry bomb shade of red that looks great smeared over cheeks and lips alike. Definitely one for the morning commute and/or school run.

The gloss: Stickgloss Lipstick in Poppy, £21, Laura Mercier available at Space NK

It was only a matter of time before our hankering for all things 80s finally caught up with our make-up bags. And high-gloss red lipstick is a shot of nostalgia in a tube. This Laura Mercier one is a modern-day nod to the decade that taste forgot, with a more subtle (and ultra-hydrating) glaze finish. We say, best worn with bare skin and minimal mascara, though 80s purists will argue the only way is a la Joan Collins: in the bath, on the phone, with one earring on. Up to you.

Long lasting: Ultimate Lipstick in Flame, £20, Becca available at Cult Beauty

For most of us, applying lipstick requires time, patience, a mirror and a minute to yourself (yep, still waiting for that last one) — particularly the higher maintenance bolder shades. So a long-lasting lippie that can do dinner, drinks, kisses and then some is the holy grail of beauty products. Becca’s ultra-creamy formula claims to last 8 hours (!) and is packed with avocado and olive oils to prevent lips from cracking and drying out over the course of the day.

Everyday luxury: Matte Revolution Lipstick in Love Liberty, £25, Charlotte Tilbury

Charlotte Tilbury’s glamour girl brand has garnered something of a thundering fashion-pack following (it helps having BFF Kate Moss as the face of your perfume). With products boasting names like ‘Pillow Talk’ and ‘The Vintage Vamp’, plus some serious #shelfie-worthy packaging, her lipsticks lend a touch of luxe to the mundane everyday. This matte revolution formula claims to have specialist 3D pigments to create the illusion of a fuller pout. Sounds about time for you to purchase a marabou-trimmed robe and start referring to the bedroom as your boudoir.
