June’s ocean-inspired reads

This June is World Oceans Month.

To celebrate, this month’s book club is all about novels inspired by the sea.

We’ve picked our top three ocean-inspired reads…

The Light Between Oceans

The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman

This Richard & Judy Book Club bestseller is an emotional one, so you may want to read it while on holiday rather than on the bus. Set after World War 1, a soldier returns to Australia and gets a job as lighthouse keeper in a remote Australian coastal village. He meets a woman there who becomes his wife and the story focuses on their desperate journey for a child. This novel was adapted into a major film last year with Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender. A must read!

Brighton Rock by Graham Greene

This crime thriller is set in 1930s Brighton and the plot revolves around the town’s dark gangster scene. A journalist comes to town and gets himself mixed up with the wrong gang, and the novel follows the sinister fallout after a murder takes place in the seaside town. Morality and love are brought into question in this classic piece of literature. Greene’s bestselling novel has been adapted into many theatre plays and films throughout the years.

The Beach

The Beach by Alex Garland

We couldn’t pick our top ocean reads without mentioning The Beach! This thriller is set on a remote, tranquil and untouched beach island idyll in Thailand and follows protagonist Richard and the other islanders navigating life in paradise, and what happens when the real world catches up. The Beach was inspired by Koh Phi Phi island in Thailand, now a massive tourist destination and is also a major blockbuster film directed by Danny Boyle and starring Leonardo Dicaprio.
