Scandia Escape – Gotland

Gotland, Sweden’s largest island and home to around 57,600 residents, is a popular retreat for both Swedes and foreigners. If you are seeking a revitalising break from the daily bustle or just wanting to experience the Scandinavian way of life – Gotland is the perfect destination for you.

Known as the ‘Summer Island’, Gotland is particularly popular during the summer months. The island brings in superb weather, which can be enjoyed by the handful of beaches the island has to offer.

Gotland is also the perfect escape during its winter months. Covered in a blanket of snow, relish in the islands untouched scenery against a roaring fire with a hot cup of cocoa.

Being of Swedish descent, I have had the pleasure to holiday in Gotland to visit friends and family, whilst discovering and exploring places which truly encompass Scandinavian culture.

Gåsens Lada – Burgsvik

Situated within a former rustic barn, with exposed walls and beamed ceilings, Gåsens Lada offers the perfect cosy setting. Choose between an array of authentic dishes with the addition of a seasonal menu, purely created by locally sourced ingredients to truly experience the taste of Gotland. Gåsens Lada also offers outside seating, allowing you to enjoy its scenic countryside backdrop.

Prastgardscafeet – Burgsvik

Located in Vamlingbo resides a small café, serving wholesome food. Enjoy the choice of fresh salads and homemade cakes, perfect with a rich cup of coffee, within Prastgardscafeet’s beautifully kept garden full of exuberant flowers and luxuriant plants.

Gotland’s capital, Visby, a well-preserved medieval city surrounded by an eye capturing town wall, encased with striking ruins, is filled with boundless atmosphere and charm. Wander along the city’s cobbled pavements to discover the enchantments of Visby, with cosy bars tucked in at every corner.

Stop off at Bolaget, a relaxing French inspired bar and restaurant, located in the heart of Visby. Choose from hand selected drinks the wine and champagne bar has to offer along with oysters, cheeses, and cold cuts to complement the palate.

To embrace Gotland’s take on #relaxedglamour, step into Vinäger, a tranquil haven inspired by the Balearic Islands of Mallorca and Ibiza. Surrounded by rustic walls, bountiful plants and contemporary furnishing, Vinäger is the idyllic setting to enjoy the sun’s rays under the bar’s open roof, whilst sipping on a refreshing cocktail.

Along the South Coast of Vamlingbo, lies a serene sandy beach. Holmhällar stretches relatively far with sea stacks at its front providing picturesque views, perfect for a summers day stroll. To the left of the beach leads to a fishing village, Holm, where stands several hundred-year-old stone finishing huts.

Körsbärsgården Konsthall & Skulpturpark

Found in the South of Gotland, Burgsvik is a contemporary art gallery showcasing Swedish and international artwork. The gallery is surrounded by luscious gardens filled with sculptures, overlooking the sea. When finished viewing the artwork, stop off at the gallery’s café and enjoy its nutritious menu whilst taking in the captivating landscape.

Immerse yourself in the island’s natural beauty by taking a hike or glacial walk along the southern tip of Gotland, Hoburgen. The very edge of the island provides an astonishing 360-degree view of the surrounding Baltic sea, cliffs and abundant wildlife. Not only is Hoburgen beautiful for a morning or afternoon walk, I highly suggest visiting in time to watch the sunset into the sea. Gaze into the sky as it turns into vivid shades of oranges and reds which reflect off the sea’s surface – creating an unforgettable moment.
