At MV, we’ve always thought that dressing up for a special occasion is never a good enough reason to lose sight of your personal style – you can look smart while staying comfortable, and turning to things that still feel like ‘you’. Rather than looking for full-on red carpet looks for inspiration, we’ve turned to style icons the likes of Alexa Chung or Olivia Palermo for outfits that mix smart with casual and that above all, exude individuality.

Olivia Palermo has a knack for making the most sophisticated looks seem utterly effortless… here she pairs a chunky knit with sequined wide leg trousers for the perfect blend of high/low dressing.

What can we say… we love everything about this look by Sandra Oh. The jumpsuit, the trainers, the tousled hair… It’s a sure-fire way to look like the coolest person in the room. Attitude not optional.

Alexa Chung has always been a fan of the tuxedo look – it’s a monochrome style she keeps turning to over the years. We think it’s particularly cool and timely this season as neck scarves have made such a comeback – there’s no need to reinvent the wheel here, we like to stick to black and white for a crisp yet relaxed silhouette.

This sparkly outfit by Zoe Kravitz couldn’t remind us more of the 90s if it tried – she pairs a long-sleeved sequined top with everyday jeans and strappy sandals for a coolest-girl-in-the-house-party look.

When only a dress will do, make it a show-stopper. Zendaya pairs hers with long boots and statement hoops for maximum impact.
