With autumn on its way, we asked Sommer Pyne, creator of House Curious – an online lifestyle shop which marries her Australian upbringing with the rich tapestry of London living – to tell us the quick and easy updates she’ll use to ensure her home is a hub of cosiness.
As the seasons change and the cool months roll in, Mother Nature’s sea of autumnal colours gives us our cue to rug up, get cosy and give our home a fitting refresh. Simply switching up your accessories and making small changes can achieve a big impact. Here’s how…
Tactile materials are so important to help create an indulgent, cosy home. Swap tropical-print cushions for soft velvets in rich, dark colours, or floral print. Use fluffy rugs, sheepskins and woolly throws throughout your home for ultimate comfort.
Gold and brass were a big trend in spring and summer and are here to stay. They instantly add so much warmth and luxury to any room.
Changing your bedding is almost as good as getting a haircut, breathing new energy into a room. I say, go with your instinct and pick a new colour scheme. You may want to incorporate autumnal colours, or it may be more personal, to suit your mood.
Plants and botanicals are my favourite accessories and should be used all year round, no matter what the season. It’s pumpkin season, so, instead of discarding your pumpkins, why not use them as a beautiful way to hold succulents? I also like to use dried hydrangeas, plus whichever flowers and shrubs are in season.
Switch off the main lights and use several different lighting sources at various heights and levels. Use floor lamps, table lamps or wall-hung lamps. And, let’s not forget candles – the more the better. In the cooler months I go for muskier, heavier scents. I also love to wipe down surfaces with essential oils or burn them in an oil burner.
