Jo Whiley tells us how she spends her Friday night getting ready for a chilled weekend with her family. This is our Friday Night Rituals series…
A CHILLED WEEKEND WITH JO WHILEY
“Friday evening is my favourite time of the whole week. It holds the promise of what’s to come whether it’s a weekend free of any commitments or a weekend full of friends and celebrations – in our home it’s a sacred time. I literally wake up in the morning looking forward to the evening and spend the day planning and preparing for it. This means buying flowers and lovingly cutting them, arranging them and placing them around the house in various nooks and crannies.
Then there’s the food… I’ll head to the shops and get in our favourite nibbles so the fridge is stocked with everything everyone in the family loves – I’m NOT a great cook simply because I’m so busy and any down time I have I’d prefer to spend in the garden or snatching a swim. However I’m great at shopping so I’ll head to our local shops and get in everyone’s favourite nibbles so the fridge is stocked with treats we all love. This will inevitably include melt-in-the-middle chocolate puddings, vodka and gin. I do like to work up an appetite so I feel like I’ve earned my Friday night bliss so after I’ve done all the work bits I need to do I’ll try to get to the pool and do a few lengths. I love the feeling of exhaustion and satisfaction after exercise.
After that, I’ll pick up a few magazines to browse over the weekend – usually something to do with interiors so I can window shop and fantasise about wallpaper and where I’d put it if I could persuade the rest of the gang that it was cool. I’ll then head for home and wait for the tribe to arrive from wherever they’ve been that week. While I wait I’ll have the radio on – Friday night radio always captures that air of anticipation really well and while I prepare the ratatouille (literally the only thing I can cook) I’ll be singing and doing some kitchen dancing (the only place I dance – where no one can see my badly co-ordinated moves).
The last stage is to light my candles – this takes quite a while because I’m OBSESSED and I like the place to sparkle like a thousand fireflies have descended on the house. I always gravitate towards smoky tones, nothing too sweet – fig is my absolute go-to or lavender which is lovely and calming and which no one seems to object to. Next I’ll change into my PJ’s, put the glasses on ice and put my feet up ’til the front door opens and the chaos that I love so much begins.
The final ritual is the pouring of the vodka and a toast with my husband Steve and my big kids India, Jude and Cassius to the weekend ahead. We’re never happier than when we’re all together and these Fridays are the kind I treasure most.”
