Festival season is nearly upon us: Isle of Wight, Festival No. 6, Port Eliot, Bestival… with so many to choose from, it can be hard to find the time to tick off your ‘festival bucket list’ so why not incorporate all your favourite carnival styles into your very own home festival?

Being outside and enjoying the fresh air is one of the highlights of warm weather even if you don’t have a spacious outside area: an airy balcony, enclosed roof-top terrace or a plant filled patio will act as a perfect stage. However, if the weather isn’t on your side you could always bring the festival indoors. Here’s some ways to recreate the festival spirit at home…

Lighting – Fairy lights in different ways

Set the scene with an abundance of fairy lights. Opt for white lights for a rustic feel or coloured if carnival vibes are more your thing.  Wrap trees and fences with warm glows or hang strategically on a wall. Better yet why not create a star-like canopy above the party.

Furniture – pallets (DIY), blankets and beanbags

No festival is complete without some boho. Scatter colourful pillows across vibrant patterned rugs, blankets and beanbags. Recycle wooden pallets to create tables, bars and chairs. A super easy, fun and effective way of getting a wow factor for any sized budget.

Pool – inflatable or built-in

Whether your pool is built in or inflatable, make it a centrepiece of your festival. Try blowing up balloons and letting them float in the pool. Here’s a tip: pop a marble inside each balloon so they don’t blow away, or, if you’ve opted for the carnival, why not try a glow stick instead? Flowers inside Hula Hoop also make a great floating alternative.

Streamers

Crepe paper streamers are the ultimate in versatile decorations. They can create bundles of impact at very little effort and cost. The things that you can create with streamers are almost endless, from wrapping them around trees to hanging them off branches to creating enormous outdoor canopies and colourful tents. They can suit any theme of festival just use them in whatever way fits.

Signage

Scrap pieces of wood nailed to a tree trunk make a rustic sign board for your festival or opt for a chalkboard so you can easily change the itinerary.

Entertainment

Why not construct an outdoor cinema for your guests to enjoy?  Simply use a white bed sheet and projector to play your much-loved music videos or better yet, show live coverage from your favourite festival.

No room for an outdoor cinema? Instead, you could ask your guests for suggestions to create the ultimate festival playlist.

Food & Drink

Personalising Prosecco is a must-have for any at-home festival so let your guests curate their bubbles with this ‘Pimp Your Prosecco’ style bar. Fill wheelbarrows and inflatable pools with ice and stock up with beers.  Worried that you’ll have to invest in hundreds of plastic cups or constantly be filling up the dishwasher? A great idea to ensure guests reuse their glasses is to create cute name tag glass accessories.

Small plates and fashionable finger food is essential to a festival, have a look at our Whats Cooking article to get some inspiration.
