Towns uncovered: EDINBURGH

Edinburgh is one of the UK’s most beautiful cities. It’s renowned for ornate architecture, natural beauty, being the site of the world’s largest arts festival… and a Mint Velvet flagship boutique store! On our strolls around Edinburgh, we’ve discovered our favourite places to eat, drink, shop and play. Here’s a selection of our top picks…

EAT

1. TIMBERYARD

An authentic, industrial-chic warehouse with plenty of history, Timberyard has a creative menu full of lovely, fresh ingredients sourced from local artisans and independent suppliers. We love that the herbs and edible flowers they use grow in their very own garden.

2. THE LOOKOUT BY GARDENER’S COTTAGE

Sitting pretty above the city, The Lookout is in the observatory on Calton Hill. It can be tricky to find, but definitely worth it. A delicious tasting menu (of up to seven courses!) with stunning views over the Edinburgh skyline… what more could you want?

3. CAFÉ ST HONORÉ

Bringing 1940s Paris to modern-day Edinburgh, Café St Honoré is a charming bistro, serving traditional French cuisine with a few Scottish favourites too. It’s tucked away on a picturesque cobbled lane, and the menu changes daily. We love the Café Classics menu (three courses of their favourite dishes).

SIP

1. THE RAGING BULL

The Raging Bull is a fantastically wacky cocktail bar, situated in the city centre – they serve some of the best espresso martinis in Edinburgh. Try one of their hazelnut, salted caramel or orange-flavoured concoctions. If you’re a keen mixologist, why not book a cocktail masterclass?

2. THE MILKMAN

If you like coffee, you’ll love The Milkman. Take a break from wandering around Edinburgh’s busy streets and watch the world go by in one of their cosy window seats for the ultimate afternoon ‘pick-me-up’.

3. THE KING’S WARK

The King’s Wark is a good old pub and eatery, built by James I in 1500 on the trendy waterfront at Leith (the port area of Edinburgh). This small, blue-fronted venue has all the traditional features we love, like dark wood, open fires and thick stone walls. We love stopping by at any time, for a morning coffee or a pint of cask ale with friends – chin-chin!

PLAY

1. ARTHUR’S SEAT

Arthur’s Seat is an ancient, extinct volcano in Holyrood Park, described by Robert Louis Stevenson as ‘a hill for magnitude, a mountain in virtue of its bold design’. It’s a short (slightly strenuous!) hike to the top, and it’s completely worth it for the stunning views. We recommend allowing two to three hours for a visit – and taking a picnic in the warmer months!

2. ROYAL BOTANIC GARDEN

Need a spot of peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle? Take some time to breathe and take in the beautiful greenery at the Royal Botanical Garden. It’s only a mile from the city centre, so it’s the perfect break after a busy shopping trip.

3. SCOTTISH NATIONAL GALLERY OF MODERN ART

Home to some of the world’s most famous art, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art is right in the heart of Edinburgh. It’s a must-see for lovers of contemporary and modern art – after exploring, why not have a rest in one of the hugely popular cafés?
