WE ARE WOMEN | THE PODCAST 10
Self Care

Hosted by Viv Groskop

Author- Viv Groskop

We always assess the impact of our actions on others; yet we somewhat overlook the impact of our actions on ourselves. Ensuring we are in tune with our emotions and kind to ourselves is an essential part of self care, the theme of our latest episode.

Our host, Viv Groskop, is joined by founders of Project Love Selina Barker and Vicki Pavitt, Facialist Abigail James and Broadcaster June Sarpong to discuss taking time out, skin care routines and the importance of your social circle.

Plus, we’re joined by Fashion Blogger Kat Farmer, who lets us know who her style icon is, and why she loves Mint Velvet skinnies.

ON WHY SELF CARE IS SO DIFFICULT WHEN IT’S SO EASY…

“If you imagine hanging out with the kind of person that’s always giving you a hard time and holding you up to impossible standards that you can never live by, then it’s gonna feel rubbish to hang out with that kind of person… that’s how we treat ourselves quite often, and I think that’s why we struggle to be kind to ourselves.”

ON WHY VIEWS OF LOVE ARE OFTEN SKEWED…

“It’s that whole Jerry Maguire thing where Renée Zellweger says to Tom Cruise “you complete me”, and rom-coms are part of the reason why we believe looking for love involves looking for someone to complete us, which is the wrong message.”

ON WHY WOMEN SHOULDN’T FEEL GUILTY ABOUT LOOKING AFTER THEMSELVES…

“There’s this idea that to be a good woman you should always be looking after others and being there for others, and we shouldn’t spend too much time thinking about ourselves, and it’s such a fallacy that that’s somehow selfish and we’ll have less to give…we have more to give when we’re really looking after ourselves.”

ON THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA…

“When we were younger it was all about the body; the magazines and the supermodels, it was that issue. But we’re now looking at things on Instagram, but the celebrities, or whoever it might be, have probably got filters over (their photos), so I think the ideal has shifted as to what’s real with the skin or not.”

ON THE DIFFICULTY OF TAKING TIME OUT FOR HERSELF…

“Often I don’t finish work until 8 o’clock in the evening, so I suppose time management is a big thing for me. I’ve got 3 children, I’m a single mum, have been for over 10 years so it’s a juggle of time management and finding those times for myself.”

ON THE FIRST STEP OF LOOKING AFTER YOUR SKIN…

“Cleansing is essential, we need to be doing that morning and night. Water on its own is actually drying to the skin, so that’s no good. Whether it’s a lotion, a balm or a wash, that’s key, and is step 1.”

ON HER DENIM GO-TO…

“I like to stick with the classics, so I’m a blue denim jeanie… I also adore black – is that a classic colour?”

ON HOW TO WEAR DENIM…

“Don’t look at the denim itself, but look at the piece of denim. Look at your wardrobe, your personal style, and just go with what makes you feel most comfortable in and what works for you.”

ON WHY SHE LOVES MINT VELVET SKINNY JEANS…

“They have an amazing fit and amazing stretch and if you’re tall like me or petite, they do them in three lengths which is SO rare for a really good fitting pair of jeans.”

ON OVERCOMING CHALLENGES…

“When tough things happen you have two choices – you allow it to make you, or you allow it to break you and I think the easier choice is to allow it to make you, because the latter is just too painful, isn’t it?”

ON SOCIAL CIRCLES…

“If those who you have the choice to socialise and interact with predominantly look like you, behave like you, think like you, speak like you, chances are you’re going to have a very narrow viewpoint, as there’s nothing in your life to challenge that, so it’s really important to create new connections.”

ON WHAT SELF CARE MEANS TO HER…

“SLEEP! Minimum 7, although I like 8…9 is also good! I also try to meditate every day; it makes a difference to my day and I definitely see a difference when I don’t.”
