Hosted by Viv Groskop

Author- Viv Groskop

As we approach International Women’s Day (8th March), we’re celebrating the beauty, and the occasional beastliness, of being a woman in the latest episode of the We Are Women podcast. Our host, Viv Groskop, is joined by Singer Melanie C, CEO and founder of Mint Velvet, Liz Houghton, Journalist Harriet Minter and Writer Otegha Uwagba, to discuss hopes for the future, inspirational women and the #MVGiving charity tee for Women for Women International.

ON THE YOUNGER FEMALE GENERATION…

“I would love to see younger girls having more of a voice and realising they can make a difference and feeling empowered to do so. Unless it starts at a younger level, by the time you get to a position where you do have more power, nothing really changes.”

ON HOPES FOR WOMEN FOR THE FUTURE…

“How women see themselves is probably the most powerful thing we have. Realising our own empowerment and then believing that actually we can do anything. Sometimes the limits are not what men put on us but what we put on ourselves.”

ON HER INSPIRATIONAL WOMAN…

“My mother Rosemary, we call Uma, she is everything I think a great human should be. Life is a roller-coaster and we’ll all going to go through ups and downs and to constantly have a smile on your face despite any circumstances is what it’s all about.”

ON WHAT SOCIAL ISSUE IS CLOSE TO HER HEART AT THE MOMENT…

“The thing that is dominating this year and is changing everything for women has been the ‘me too’ movement. For me, it’s about women’s stories being spoken about, listened to and really being heard. It started off around sexual harassment but I think it’s now about how we see ourselves within culture & society. It’s about the daily experiences we have that are different from men. It’s about telling humanity from a woman’s point of view and I feel like that is first time it’s really happened.”

ON THE WOMAN WHO INSPIRES HER THE MOST…

“My great grandmother, Florence, known as Nan. I grew up listening to all the stories about her and how she created her own life. She decided what she wanted and she went out and made it happen.”

ON INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY…

“I like that there is a point every year where everyone stands up and says ‘no still not sorted, still a problem’”

ON WHATS ON HER MIND AT THE MOMENT…

“Women’s relationships with money. Economic empowerment is one of the most important things women can have. Striving for financial independence and financial literacy are all important to me and issues I want to see become more of a conversation this year”

ON THE WOMAN WHO INSPIRES HER THE MOST…

“Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, her writing has introduced an entire generation of women and girls to feminism and I think that is just amazing”

ON HER HOPES FOR THE FUTURE…

“I’m keen for there to be tangible change and tangible consequences.”

ON HER ADVICE ON DEPRESSION…

“My main advice would be, if you’re concerned about anything, you have to talk about it. People need people. The thing I always remember now, nothing is forever, your mood is like the sky and your depression is like the clouds, it will pass”

ON THE DIFFERENCE ON THE WORLD FROM BEING A SPICE GIRL TO NOW…

“People evolve, my experience of the young people around me is they’re so much more outspoken. My little girl totally knows what she wants and she’s not afraid to say it, that wasn’t me, she’s more of a spice girl than I ever was”

ON HER MESSAGE ON INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY…

“Coming from a Spice Girl, you can do anything! If we put our minds to it we can do whatever we want”
