Social Summer

Hosted by Viv Groskop

Author- Viv Groskop

Summer is here and negotiating a busy season of events can be a social minefield! This episode we’re going to dive into the delights of the summer – from etiquette to elegance and hearing from Comic and Actor Ellie Taylor, Author Lucy Mangan and Jo Bryant alongside our host, Viv Groskop.

ON THE THING SHE DISLIKES MOST ABOUT SOCIAL SITUATIONS…

“The thought of having to make small talk is terrifying but when I’m there it’s much better. I do think I’m quite socially awkward, I get quite a lot of anxiety especially around other comedians like a comedian party is probably my idea of hell.”

ON HER SOCIALISING NIGHTMARE…

“It would involve a train journey, if you bump into somebody you vaguely know on a train journey, my heart sinks. What I want to say is, oh it’s nice to see you but I’m going to sit in another carriage so I don’t have to talk to you.”

ON HER ADVICE FOR THE WEDDING SEASON AHEAD…

“I found my own wedding so overwhelming and the whole time I was just questioning if this was the best day of my life, because you know, that’s what people say. Is this the best bit now? Was it better than 5mins ago? The whole time was just this monologue going off in my head and I think I got into it about half 11 at night, once I’d had a few drinks. I wish I could do it again and not think too much into the ‘rules’ of how it should be.”

ON HER SUMMER SOCIAL EVENT CHOICE…

“It’s the same as my winter social event of choice, stay in and read! I’d like a world in which winter was the time for going out because I like tights, I like jumpers and I like trousers. Summer is very stressful for me!”

ON SOCIAL SITUATIONS WITH FELLOW BOOKWORMS…

“Through my book we’ve all sort of found each other, we just nod or they come up and say I love your book then we part ways forever but think of each other fondly for many years.”

ON THE SOCIAL CHALLENGE OF CHILDREN’S BIRTHDAY PARTIES…

“Organising my child’s birthday every year, is the worst time of my year. It’s so much work! They’re so confident now and you have to be so careful of everyone’s minute rules, and they talk back! It’s like having a bunch of 40-year-olds round.”

ON THE ART OF SMALL TALK…

“The art of conversation is always a tricky one and I think it’s something you need to practice. Small talk is called small for a reason, you shouldn’t be shy to say, what the weather is like or what a beautiful room we’re in – you have to work with what you’ve got.”

ON CORRECT ETIQUETTE…

“Today etiquette is less about tea cups and protocol, I believe it’s more about social confidence that comes with hosting and guesting.”

ON WHAT TO WEAR TO A WEDDING…

“When it comes to what to wear to a wedding your invitation is your biggest clue. Your flowery marquee in the Cotswolds is going to be very different to a sleek London hotel, so you need to sort of adjust your outfit for the location you’re in.”
