Time Out

Hosted by Viv Groskop

Author- Viv Groskop

This month we’re discussing ‘time out’, time out from stress, from family, from routines and even ourselves – why it matters and why it’s so hard to do. We’ll hear from our very first male guest, writer and actor Robert Webb alongside our studio guests, comedian Grainne Maguire and mental health consultant Petra Velzeboer together with our host, Viv Groskop.

ON THE ASPECT OF HERSELF SHE’D MOST LIKE TO TAKE A BREAK FROM…

“I’ve got a lot of nervous energy and I am quite hard on myself and I work a lot, if I could change one part, I would like to feel more gratitude and serenity and appreciate myself for what is instead of always thinking about what’s next.”

ON TAKING TIME OUT…

“I don’t want to endure something and push through it. Everyday could be our last, it’s important to enjoy it and be joyful. I want to make sure I take time out every day to do something for me.”

ON TAKING TIME OUT FROM WORK…

“To be creative there has to be two things. There’s the craft part where you work and work and work then you also need to create space for the subconscious, for ideas to just float in and you need both together to come up with the really good stuff.”

ON HAVING TIME OUT AS A PARENT…

“I’ve had to learn if I don’t lead by example in taking time out, I’m just creating action machines who will hit burn out as well. You have to teach them how to ‘be’ and that’s still my hardest lesson.”

THE DIFFERENCE FROM TAKING TIME OUT TO AVOIDING THINGS…

“People avoid through Netflix, the news, online dating, addiction, there’s so much avoidance. I am a recovering alcoholic and have been 10 years sober so I know first-hand what escapism and avoidance looks like and the consequences of it. Time out to me is healthy and doing things that nurture our souls. ”

ON THE IMPORTANCE OF TAKING TIME OUT TO UNDERSTAND YOURSELF…

“Men have to deal with a lot of emotional oppression when they get angry or embarrassed or scared they don’t know how to deal with it because you just don’t take time out growing up to develop those skills of an emotional detective, of why you’re feeling what you’re feeling.”

ON TAKING TIME OUT…

“It’s difficult to switch off but you have to. I tried meditation but found it was stressing me out because I was kind of going, ‘oh jeeze, it’s 11 o’clock and I still haven’t meditated, quick let’s get 10 minutes in’. So I realised that kind of time out isn’t for me.”
