Nail Trend

Taking inspiration from the catwalks, beauty guru and make-up artist, Claire Urquhart reveals her top nail trends for spring…

Get glamorous and use glitter…

At Rodarte this season, the team used minimal glitter but achieved maximum impact. Rather than coating the whole nail in a gold glitter, only the models cuticles were lined, giving the look a more sophisticated feel. Make sure the cuticle is well prepped before beginning. Start with a clear base coat, let it dry and then use a thin brush to line the cuticle with the glitter polish.

A pop of colour…

Colour and pattern were used a lot this season but can be difficult to achieve on your own.  Try alternating bright colours on just the tips of the nail to create a twist on the French manicure.  Finish with a metallic gold dot at the small moon at the base of the nail for some added fun, and seal with a top-coat.

Keep it natural…

Nail artist Marian Newman explains “It’s less about colour for me this season and more about a very glossy texture”.  To achieve this clean, minimal look, apply one coat of Orly’s BB Crème Nail Varnish. This will even out the colour of your nail plus smoothen and moisturise it too. Finish with two coats of a high-gloss top coat.

For all these looks, good nail care is essential.  Here are a few tips to help maintain them…

Keep your cuticles healthy…

Massaging cuticle oil in to the base of the nail helps stimulates blood in the area encouraging growth and keeps the cuticles moisturised.  If you do this regularly, it will lessen the need for pushing back or removing excess cuticle, which can lead to infections.

Keep your nails trimmed…

It’s becoming more on trend to have shorter, more natural looking nails and trimming nails regularly will avoid snagging or breaking.  Trim with nail clippers and use a glass file to smooth the edges of the nail.

Don’t be scared of wearing nail polish!

Nail polish won’t harm your healthy nails, in fact it can be good for them! It provides a barrier between the nail and external aggressors that can weaken the nail.  Give your nails a break periodically, always choosing to use an acetone free remover when doing so.
